In the meantime we had gotten company of nine more people. There was Tormod, Thrine, Andreas (Ade), Mari (likes Damien) and Martine (Mermaid) from Norway, Jared from the UK and Janne, Johanna and Jaana from Finland.
Since both Damien and Jamie-Lee were about to leave if no improvement came and the new people seemed kind of distant I wanted to leave with them. Things however were about to change drastically, forcing us to revisit our plans.
I’m not sure if the complaint caused it or the availability of more working hands, but a lot of new work was suddenly to be found. We were split in teams and on the first working day we cleaned out the kitchen and meat room, helped skin a sheep and we helped with the feeding. On the second day we did basics and washed all the animal’s blankets. Furthermore we improved Duma and Lala’s enclosure with a two-story Caracal fort. Later on in the week we’ll also go to the cricket farm to get new crickets as we had just run out and who knows what other tasks still await us.
Damien, Jamie-Lee, Taru and me also brainstormed on improvements and today (the second working day) I gave the list to Marni in good faith that the ideas would be looked at seriously. When it came to animal interaction I had quite a few new experiences as well. Igugu, the talkative meerkat climbed on my lap for some cuddles and the servals Sylvestre and Milan seemed like a couple of big sized housecats. They purringly rubbed their heads against me, jumped on my lap, hugged and played with the strings of my hoody. The people also seemed the open up a bit more. Andreas, Johanna and Jaana were teamed together with me, Jamie-Lee and Taru and the base for what affectionately became known as team poopoo was formed. During work we had nice sing-alongs and we had a blast while creating the Caracal fort together.
When it comes to amusement we did quite a few other things as well. We played UNO on one night and went to the movies on another. Laughing ourselves silly watching 22 jump street was also a nice bonding experience.
The following days work continued and brought everybody a bit closer together. The Norwegian people seemed to warm up to us and we even had a nice surprise birthday party for Janne, and he seemed really touched by the gesture.
All this hard work did take me away from Alzu for a while, and it became evident that he missed me when I knelt beside the fence of his enclosure after feeding time. He jumped up against the fence, played catch with my hands and licked them.
All in all things were looking up.
